As part of my musical exploration of Romantic Hakka Route Number Three, I headed for Guanxi to find my friend, Huang Tz-hsuan. He'd recently returned to his hometown to ensure a better life for his child, and I was keen to better understand this return to his roots.
I discovered that many other young people are coming home, just as he had done, opening new shops along the Old Street. Typically, traditional old streets are where we find a sense of history. But this Old Street has now become a road for coming home and for life renewed.
Just as Water Buffalo – once invaluable to Taiwan farmers – helped to till the fields for planting, this returning generation is planting seeds, ensuring a brighter future by making the old street live again.
